Political Landscape of Wyoming

Partisan Composition of Wyoming

Overall, Wyoming is considered a deep red state, with a Cook PVI of R+25 as of 2022, regularly voting 65%-75% Republican in statewide races. Their US Senators, US House Representative, Governor and all statewide positions are Republican. Republicans also have a supermajority in both the state house (57-5) and state senate (29-2) as of the 2023 legislative session, giving Republicans a statewide trifecta (as of 1/28/24).

Progressive Outlook for Wyoming

The overall progressive strategy for Wyoming is bleak. The state has been solidly conservative for decades and this is unlikely to change in the near future. Therefore, the focus should be on harm reduction and ballot measures that are able to effectively limit the control of the Republican supermajority trifecta while federal changes are incoming. There are also several districts between the state house and state senate that you can help campaign and canvass for in 2024. As Wyoming is a closed-primary state, a viable strategy is to register as a Republican to vote for the more moderate candidates on the primary ballot.

• Wyoming Democratic Party- The Wyoming Democrats are the largest organization in Wyoming that tolerates progressive ideas. Signing up with them to run for local positions may just be the way you make the change you want to see in this world.
• Wyoming AFL-CIO - Heavily centered around workers rights and political activism, this would also be a good place to start. The AFL-CIO regularly endorses candidates who care about the rights of the working-class.
• Wyoming Education Association - An educational PAC which ranks Wyoming legislators on how much they care about education. They have events and membership.

Non-progressive candidates may also be placed here if they are substantially to the left of their district's partisan lean and worth campaigning for. If you see a candidate or ballot measure that should be on this list, please add them.

November 5th General Election

These races will ensure that Wyoming becomes slightly less red in 2024. Every seat counts!

• Marguerite Herman for WY-SD-8: R+6. This, aside from the two state senate districts which are already blue, is the least red state senate district in Wyoming by several %. She only lost this same race by 100 votes in 2022. Can you knock 100 houses?
• Sara Burlingame for WY-HD-11: R+5 open race, this is a good shot of flipping a seat in the state legislature blue!
• Trey Sherwood for WY-HD-14: R+2 district that Trey was able to make D+10 in 2022. She is an electoral powerhouse who'll lead Wyoming to educational freedom!
• Ivan Posey for WY-HD-33: This district is approximately D+2, so any Democrat running here will have a significant chance of expanding the Wyoming state house.
• Jen Solis for WY-HD-41: This district is only R+9, so it's not inconceivable that Solis would win here. If you're in her area, she could use your support!

• House Minority Leader Mike Yin - Mike Yin is a progressive Democrat who is also a software developer and is the minority party leader in Wyoming's state house. He holds the bluest state house district in Wyoming (68% Democrat from 2016-2020).
• Trey Sherwood -The only Democrat in Wyoming to hold a state office, house or senate, with a partisan lean that's even slightly Republican (R+2). She likely has great insights into how to reach across the aisle and attract moderate/conservative voters.
• Ken Chestek - Ken cares about the environment, increasing the minimum wage in Wyoming and expanding people's rights as a state rep.
• Liz Storer - A 35 year Wyoming resident, new state representative who cares about conservation and affordable housing.
• Karlee Provenza - Cares about justice, legalizing marijuana in WY as a state representative.

• Senate Minority Leader Chris Rothfuss- Chris Rothfuss is a Chemical Engineer who serves as the state senate minority leader in Wyoming.
• Mike Giraeu- The other senate Democrat from the only other safely blue senate seat in Wyoming. Has priorities of education, healthcare and reproductive freedom.
