Partisan Composition of Washington D.C.

Overall, Washington D.C. is considered an overwhelmingly-blue district, regularly voting 80-90% Democrat in district-wide races. In fact, no Democrat running for mayor of D.C. has ever gotten less than 55% of the vote since they started holding elections in the 70's. The mayor, as such, is a Democrat. Progressive Outlook for Washington D.C.

The overall progressive strategy for Washington D.C. is pretty straightforward. The state already votes for Democrats by a large margin, so the gameplan is making sure those Democrats are high-quality progressive voices with the aim of enfranchising D.C. into its own state for greater electoral representation. D.C. appreciates big government and the Democrat primaries for various city positions are the real elections here. The mayor is the main government executive body whereas the city council is the legislative body, with the council containing 5 at-large council members and 8 ward members.
