Political Landscape of South Carolina

Partisan Composition of South Carolina

Overall, South Carolina is considered a red state, with a Cook PVI of R+8 as of 2022, regularly voting 50-60% Republican in statewide races. Both US senators, the governor as well as all but one of their seven US House seats (due to light gerrymandering) are Republican. Republicans also hold supermajorities in the state house (88-36) and state senate (30-15-1 independent), as of 2/8/24.

Progressive Outlook for South Carolina

The overall progressive strategy for South Carolina is troubled. The main focus should be on harm reduction, holding blue seats and flipping red seats on a state level while waiting for federal help. As South Carolina is an open primary state, it is recommended to vote for more moderate Republicans in the primary so as to reduce harm.
