Political Landscape of North Carolina

Partisan Composition of North Carolina

Overall, North Carolina is considered a swing state, with a Cook PVI of R+3 as of 2022, regularly voting for either candidate in statewide races, though typically Republican by tiny margins. Their governor is a Democrat, both US Senators are Republicans, and the US House is evenly-split with 7 Democrats and 7 Republicans, though this is overwhelmingly likely to change in 2024 with the recent Republican gerrymander. Due to said gerrymandering, Republicans also have a supermajority in the state house (72-48) and a majority in the state senate (30-20) as of 2/10/24, leaving state control split.

Progressive Outlook for North Carolina

The overall progressive strategy for North Carolina is optimistic. North Carolina has generally been on the cusp of flipping blue for quite a while, so this is an essential Biden pickup state. The biggest priority is undoing the gerrymandered maps and ensuring Democrats have a chance here moving forward, but due to the extremely blue seats created by gerrymandering, this is also a prime opportunity to make sure progressives are holding said seats in the 2024 election cycle. Victory looks like a Biden win in 2024 alongside the NC governorship, with the state legislature being blue enough to be veto-able again. The state has no citizen-led ballot initiatives. North Carolina has semi-closed primaries, so registering independent and choosing which party whose primary result you want to alter is a viable path.

March 5th Primary Election (Filing Deadline December 15th 2023)

The March 5th primary will determine quite a bit in this swing state. Be sure to vote for and support candidates based on more than just ideology - a moderate Democrat is still better than a Republican!

  • Jeff Jackson for Attorney General - Though Jeff Jackson isn't progressive, his level of integrity and straightforwardness make him an excellent choice for winning the state. He'll need your help in both the primary and general!

May 14th Primary Runoff Election

November 5th General Election

  • Don Davis for US House NC-1: With the new gerrymandered maps, NC-1 is the only competitive US house district in North Carolina for the 2024 election cycle. Don Davis (D) is running for re-election to this seat and needs your support!
