Political Landscape of Iowa

Partisan Composition of Iowa

Overall, Iowa is considered a red state, with a Cook PVI of R+6 as of 2022, regularly voting 50-55% Republican in statewide races. Their US Senators, all four US House representatives and governor are Republican. Republicans also have majorities in the state house (64-36) and state senate (34-16) as of 2/8/24, giving them a trifecta.

Progressive Outlook for Iowa

The overall progressive strategy for Iowa is troubled. It will likely be red for a while, and there are no citizen-led ballot initiatives allowed, but three of their four US House seats are flippable in 2024 and Rob Sand (D) still holds statewide office as auditor, so Democrat victories aren't impossible. The progressive priority here should be on forming a strong opposition and blunting the Republican legislature in order to make Iowa back into a swing state. As Iowa is an open primary state, be sure to take a ballot from the party of whom you wish to meddle.

November 5th General Elections

Three out of four of Iowa's US House seats are flippable (R+2-6) for 2024, so if you live in Iowa, you're very likely to be able to contribute to flipping the house!

  • Christina Bohannan for IA-1: Incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) will face off against Bohannan and this is a prime chance to flip this seat in 2024. If you live around southeast Iowa, she could use your support!
  • Sarah Corkey for IA-2: Incumbent Ashley Hinson (R) will face off against Corkey and this is a prime chance to flip this seat in 2024. If you live near northeast Iowa, she could use your support!
  • Lanon Baccam for IA-3: This is the closest house seat by far. Incumbent Zach Nunn (R) will face off against Baccam and this is a prime chance to flip this seat in 2024. If you're near southern/southwest/center Iowa, he could use your support!
