Welcome to the District of Columbia state page! Here, DC organizers can access and document ongoing projects, current leadership positions, upcoming races, and other important information. This list is non-exhaustive, and state teams are encouraged to expand and adapt these pages to their organizing needs.


Who is Eligible to Vote?

  • I am a United States Citizen
  • I live in the District of Columbia
  • I do not claim voting residence or the right to vote in another U.S. state or territory
  • I am at least 16 years old
  • I have not been found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote

Where to Register to Vote?

1. ONLINE

2. BY MAIL, E-MAIL, or FAX, downloading the Voter Registration Application and following these steps:

  • STEP 1 Open and print the Mail in Voter Registration Application
  • STEP 2 Complete fields 1 to 13.
  • STEP 3 Sign the form.
  • STEP 4Submit the form by mail (postage prepaid), fax, or just take a picture with your cell phone and send it by email.

3. IN-PERSON, visiting our office or any voter registration agency, or you may register and vote at the same time during Early Voting and Election Day (Same Day Registration):

If the deadlines for the receipt of voter registration applications and updates submitted online, by mail, or in person at the Board of Elections or another voter registration agency have passed, you can still register during early voting or on Election Day. To register when you vote, you must provide proof of residence that shows your name and current District of Columbia address. Acceptable forms of proof of residence include:

Same Day Registration

If you are not registered to vote, you may do so at any vote center providing that you show acceptable proof of residence. Acceptable forms of proof of residence include:

  • Current and valid District of Columbia DMV issued ID
  • Government check or paycheck*
  • Bank statement*
  • Current utility bill*
  • Student housing statement/tuition bill
  • Homeless shelter occupancy statement
  • Lease
  • Other government document with your name and address

* The issue, bill, or statement date must be within 90 days of Election Day

Note: The address on the proof of residence document must match the residence address listed on your registration application.

After providing acceptable proof of residence, you will be asked to complete a Registration Update Form which will be returned to DCBOE following the election. Once you have completed the Registration Update form, you will be issued a live (regular) ballot.

You should receive an updated Voter Registration Card with your up-to-date information within six to eight weeks of Election Day.

If you do not provide an acceptable proof of residence, you will be required to vote a Special Ballot and will have until 5:00 pm on the Thursday following Election Day to present acceptable proof of residence to the Board in order to have your Special Ballot counted.
