Welcome to the Kansas state page! Here, Kansas organizers can access and document ongoing projects, current leadership positions, upcoming races, and other important information. This list is non-exhaustive, and state teams are encouraged to expand and adapt these pages to their organizing needs.

Political Landscape of Kansas

Partisan Composition of Kansas

Overall, Kansas is considered a red state, with a Cook PVI of R+10 as of 2022, regularly voting 55-60% Republican in statewide races. Interestingly, their governor is a Democrat. Both of their US Senators and 3 out of 4 of their US House representatives are Republican. Republicans also have supermajorities in the state house (85-40) and state senate (29-11-1-1), giving them a veto-proof supermajority but not a trifecta.

Progressive Outlook for Kansas

The overall progressive strategy for Kansas is troubled but with a glimmer of hope. The KS Democrat party hasn't held a senate seat here since 1939, but they currently hold the governorship. As such, Laura Kelly has been able to move the state leftward and minimize the harm of the Republican state legislature. Making sure she has a good successor is vital, as is defending Sharice Davids's US House seat after their gerrymander. Because of a strong opposition, abortion rights have been protected and infrastructure built. As Kansas is a semi-closed primary state, it may make more sense to ask for a Republican primary ballot depending on where you live.

  • Kansas Democrats: As Kansas is a red state, the state's Democratic party is your best bet for progressive/liberal organizing efforts. They're a strong opposition party.

Non-progressive candidates may also be placed here if they are substantially to the left of their district's partisan lean and worth campaigning for. If you see a candidate or ballot measure that should be on this list, please add them.

November 5th General Election

  • Sharice Davids for Congress: Sharice Davids is the only Democrat to hold federal office in Kansas, and the only race to focus on this year on that level for those in Kansas. Her campaign could use your support!
