Welcome to the Minnesota state page! Here, Minnesota organizers can access and document ongoing projects, current leadership positions, upcoming races, and other important information. This list is non-exhaustive, and state teams are encouraged to expand and adapt these pages to their organizing needs.

Political Landscape of Minnesota

Partisan Composition of Minnesota

Overall, Minnesota is considered a slightly blue state, with a Cook PVI of D+1 as of 2022, regularly voting 50-55% Democrat in statewide races. Their governor, both US Senators and 4 out of 8 of their US House members are Democrats. Democrats also have majorities in the state legislature, 70-64 in the state house and 34-33 in the state senate (as of 2/10/24), giving them a trifecta.

Progressive Outlook for Minnesota

The overall progressive strategy for Minnesota is very optimistic. The state's Democrat governor is paving the way for many progressive priorities and is making the most of his 1 vote majority to enact sweeping changes in many areas that progressives like. Walz is singlehandedly an argument in favor of electoralism changing things. As such, the progressive priority for 2024 should be rewarding him by keeping the state blue federally, statewide and locally in order to maximize the effectiveness of how he'll use the state legislature. Minnesota does not have citizen-led ballot initiatives. Minnesota is an open primary state, so feel free to grab whichever primary ballot you feel would be most helpful.

Progressive Organizations in Minnesota

Below is a list of progressive organizations in Minnesota. If you see a state organization that isn't on this list, please add it.

Notable Campaigns in 2024

Below is a list of progressive candidates or ballot measures in the 2024 election cycle for Minnesota. Non-progressive candidates may also be placed here if they are substantially to the left of their district's partisan lean and worth campaigning for. If you see a candidate or ballot measure that should be on this list, please add them.

August 3rd Primary Election (Filing Deadline June 4th)

As Minnesota's US House delegation contains arguably no swing seats, the primaries are vital for electing progressive candidates. Competitive primaries are shown below.

  • MN-3: With Dean Phillips vacating this solidly-blue seat to cosplay as a progressive presidential candidate, this race is an open contest between Ron Harris (D) and Kelly Morrison (D). Information on the progressive choice will be finalized upon June 4th.
  • MN-5: Ilhan Omar's seat. She almost lost her primary in 2022 and damage has only been worsened as of October 7th. Though she may hold controversial views on Israel and Palestine, there will undoubtably be lots of Republican/AIPAC money coming in to replace her with a conservative Democrat in a deep blue seat, which is unacceptable. Therefore, progressives in Minnesota, lend her your support!

November 5th General Election

As Minnesota is only slightly blue, statewide races here are always competitive. Definitely add them as they come up.

Run for Local Office

An underrated way to impact change is to run for a local position! Please feel free to add information on doing so below.
