Political Landscape of Utah

Partisan Composition of Utah

Overall, Utah is considered a red state, with a Cook PVI of R+13 as of 2022, regularly voting 55-60% Republican in statewide races. Their US senate delegation, US house delegation (4), and governorship are all Republican. There are also Republican supermajorities on the state house (61-13) and state senate (23-6), giving Republicans a trifecta (as of 1/29/24).

Progressive Outlook for Utah

The overall progressive strategy for Utah is troubled. The main strategy here should be harm reduction and forming a strong opposition. The state does allow for citizen-led ballot questions and this can be used to blunt the Republican trifecta. Focusing also on attempts to re-enfranchise Salt Lake City voters, the state's main bastion of liberals or progressives, is suggested. As Utah is known for having more moderate Republicans on social issues, writing to them in defense of LGBT rights isn't completely out of the question. As Utah is a closed primary state for Republicans and Republicans are the dominant party there, it is also viable to register as a Republican and vote for the more moderate candidates as a means of further harm reduction.
