Welcome to the Kentucky state page! Here, Kentucky organizers can access and document ongoing projects, current leadership positions, upcoming races, and other important information. This list is non-exhaustive, and state teams are encouraged to expand and adapt these pages to their organizing needs.

Political Landscape of Kentucky

Partisan Composition of Kentucky

Overall, Kentucky is considered a deep red state, with a Cook PVI of R+16 as of 2022, regularly voting 60-65% Republican in statewide races. Interestingly, Kentucky's governor is a Democrat. Both of their US Senators and 5 out of 6 of their US House representatives are Republican. Republicans hold comfortable supermajorities in the state legislature - 78-20 with 2 vacancies in the state house, 31-7 in the state senate (as of 2/10/24), giving them a veto-proof majority but not a trifecta.

Progressive Outlook for Kentucky

The overall progressive strategy for Kentucky is troubled. The state does not allow for ballot measures and the Republican state legislature is veto-proof. The priority here should be harm reduction while waiting for federal support and making sure KY-3 is held by a progressive in the future, as this is the only blue seat in Kentucky on a federal level. Progressives here would also do well to make sure the Beshear name is alive and well by supporting the Democrat governor, as he can at least ensure the state legislature has to work that much harder to make people's lives worse. As Kentucky is a closed primary state, it is also recommended to register as a Republican to participate in their primaries, voting for moderate Republicans as a further means of harm reduction. Kentucky is an ancestral Democrat state and there's still strong support for unions and fiscal liberalism, meaning the right candidate can win!
