Welcome to the Mississippi state page! Here, Mississippi organizers can access and document ongoing projects, current leadership positions, upcoming races, and other important information. This list is non-exhaustive, and state teams are encouraged to expand and adapt these pages to their organizing needs.

Political Landscape of Mississippi

Partisan Composition of Mississippi

Overall, Mississippi is considered a deep red state, with a Cook PVI of R+11 as of 2022, regularly voting 55-60% Republican in statewide races. Both their US Senators and governor are Republican. Their US House delegation is 3 Republicans, 1 Democrat. Republicans have supermajorities in the state legislature - 79-41-2 Independents in the state house, 36-16 in the state senate (as of 2/10/24), giving them a trifecta.

Progressive Outlook for Mississippi

The overall progressive strategy for Mississippi is troubled. The state has been conservative for decades and this is unlikely to change in the near future, but there is hope. The main priority of progressives here is fighting on the local level and following Brandon Presley's example of how Democrats can win statewide contests. It is also possible to advance progressive priorities via citizen-led ballot amendments. As Mississippi is an open primary state, it is also recommended to vote in the Republican primary for moderate candidates as a further means of harm reduction. The one US House seat held by a Democrat should also be targeted for progressive candidates in the primary. Additionally, in what very few blue seats there are, due to MS election laws, progressive third-party or independent candidates are not subject to the spoiler effect due to runoffs.
