Welcome to the Arizona state page! Here, Arizona organizers can access and document ongoing projects, current leadership positions, upcoming races, and other important information. This list is non-exhaustive, and state teams are encouraged to expand and adapt these pages to their organizing needs.
Political Landscape of Arizona
Partisan Composition of Arizona
Overall, Arizona is considered a swing state, with a Cook PVI of R+2 as of 2022, regularly voting for either candidate in statewide races. The governor, both US Senators and 3 of their 9 US House representatives are either Democrats or caucus with Democrats. Republicans, however, have slight majorities in the state house (31-29) and state senate (16-14) as of 2/10/24, meaning that state control is mixed, with the governor being able to veto.
Progressive Outlook for Arizona
The overall progressive strategy for Arizona is optimistic. The state allows for ballot measures, so progressives can enact change through direct democracy this way. The biggest pain point currently is the Republican majorities on the state legislature, but Hobbs has been able to severely limit their damage via veto. The progressive strategy in 2024 should involve flipping the state legislature blue, getting Gallego in the senate and flipping AZ-1 and AZ-6 to reclaim the house on a federal level and solidify the state's blueness. As Arizona is a semi-closed primary state, it's recommended you participate in whichever primary makes the most sense as an Independent depending on where you are.
